What is Kinesio Tape?
Kinesio tape or its other name, Kinesio Tex Gold, is a specially-designed heat-sensitive tape that offers the patient or athlete extra support and stability during rehabilitation. Kinesio tape allows full range of motion during daily activities. The Kinesio Taping Method is utilized by occupational therapists, physical therapists, athletic trainers, physicians, and chiropractors in a variety of settings: hospitals, clinics, high schools, universities, and both amateur and professional sports teams. The Kinesio Taping Method was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase almost three decades ago and is the gold standard in therapeutic taping education. The colors currently available are BLACK, BEIGE, BLUE, and RED and generally in a water-resistant two inch width however, Orthoco also carries the BEIGE in both a one inch and three inch water-resistant format. New uses and techniques will continue to evolve. Kinesio Tape is made of 100% high grade cotton so it is breathable. In addition, Kinesio Tape is latex-free! With proper skin prep, the water-resistant variety of Kinesio Tape that is available below should stay on the skin for up to three days (or more). Proper skin prep means that the skin area is free of oil, dirt, sweat, and even lotion prior to applying the tape. The manufacturer recommends that the tape be applied at least one hour prior to activity to allow the adhesive to set. Note, excessive body hair will affect tape performance and therefore should be shaved prior to tape application. Cutting the Kinesio Tex tape is easily handled with a good set of metal shears (the kind used by tailors).
Some customers have asked if there is any "performance" difference between the colors. The manufacturer has assured us that there is no physical or performance difference between any of the colors. Also, the RED Kinesio Tape really looks pink than a more traditional "fire engine" red (in our humble opinion). So if you're looking for pink kinesio tape for purchase, just pick up a box or bulk roll of the red!
Kinesio Taping Tips and Tricks:
Always clean the area thoroughly with soap and water before applying Kinesio Tape.
Trim excessive body hair.
Proper technique is crucial - never over-stretch Kinesio Tape or it will not adhere for long and may end up causing skin irritation or blistering. You will notice that Kinesio Tape "recoils" or shrinks when the paper backing is removed; that pre-shrunken state (paper backing attached) is the ideal amount of stretch (about 10%) that Kinesio Taping practitioners prefer when applying Kinesio Tape.
Seek expert advice: Kinesio Taping looks simple to the untrained eye but several years of research, development, and training by certified instructors and practitioners have created the foundation of clinical success that supports the product. Ask your physical therapist, occupational therapist, chiropractor, physician or rehab professional about Kinesio Tape and whether or not they would recommend it for your specific condition.
When possible, store Kinesio Tape in a dark, cool, and dry place. Okay, the car may not be the best place.
